Hello Families of 4W, With vacation and snow days thrown in, it has been a wild, wintery mix-up in 4W. We have tried our best to maintain some “normalcy” here in 4W, but there have been some things that were put aside for a time. Ward Weekly is back on track and we are looking forward to spring on Tuesday, we hope! It has been truly impressive to see how everyone has been working toward making the production of Mary Poppins a success! These are very talented children and they are surely going places! We are looking forward to more great performances this weekend! Thank you again for sharing such wonderful children with us! Make your moments count, Mrs. Ward Weekly Affirmation: I am stepping into my greatness! Math We have been working hard on fractions and are focusing on fractions as parts of a whole, as well as identifying equivalent fractions. Today we did an activity on fractions of a nutritional diet following the guidelines of myplate.gov. Be on the lookout for colorful and nutritional fraction “plates” coming home today. Social Studies This week we talked about why government matters and how we are blessed to have a say through voting. Thank you to all of you who got out in the snow and voted on Tuesday! Next week we will look at levels and branches of government. Words Words will continue as normal this coming week! Continue to practice at home. Thank you for your flexibility with the two week, word list due to snow. TEAM TEAM time round 3 started this week as we focus in on multi-step word problems in math. Reading We have been working hard at discussing the author’s purpose as they write their books. Consider asking questions about your child’s reading that makes them use evidence from the book to support their thinking. Or, tie their reading to an experience from their life or yours. Writing These writers are working hard to finish up their opinions, start new ones, and continue working on some incredible “green belt” writing. Interested? Ask what green belt means.

Hello Families of 4W, Another amazing week in 4W was had, nothing earth shattering, but nonetheless it was a full week of hands on, real life learning! I hope you enjoyed the update yesterday about the Earthquake happenings. Today at all school morning meeting Dominic, Mason, Callie, and Grace presented a slideshow on earthquakes that they put together moments before presenting. They pulled from great work they had done in class and really gave a great show to the whole school. Well done! Next week, we will try to keep spring fever at bay and focus on getting a lot of learning in before we break for winter vacation. We are talking a lot about taking care of ourselves with good hand washing, hydration, healthy eating, and adequate rest. Make your moments count, Mrs. Ward Weekly Affirmation: I am a caring friend. Math This week we took a fraction pre-test to see where we are at with fractions. Our class is able to easily identify, shade, and create fractions. Next week we will be discussing equivalent fractions and how we go about finding them. Social Studies This week we moved on to Social Studies as we begin talking about our state government in preparation for our trip to the State House next month. We will be discussing government at the state level since NH is our focus. Words Words will continue as normal this week! Continue to practice at home. TEAM TEAM time round 2 will wrap up this week, with the last day being Thursday. Sometime after vacation round 3 will begin. Reading It has been a wonder to see these kids in action as they put their learning from this book to the test in real life. They continue to impress me with how they see each other’s differences, difficulties, and successes! What a great group of young people! I am grateful to spend my days learning with each of them! Hello Families of 4W, What a wacky week of wild winter weather! I hope that all of your families were able to stay safe during the stormy weather and were able to spend some extra time enjoying one another this week! Let’s hope that the coming week is a little less wild and a lot more predictable in terms of weather! This past week we enjoyed some hands on projects, including a delicious math lesson that connected adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, measurement, conversions and profit concepts to their use in the real world. Mrs. Hemenway brought in cookies and the recipe to share. We turned it into a great life lesson on how math matters outside of school. Thanks so much for the yummy cookies! Math: Wacky weather prevented a full blown kickoff to Fractions, but next week we will be in full swing with identifying fractions and naming equivalent fractions. Please be on the lookout for fractions in your daily life. Science: Today groups presented their topics on Landform: formation and changes. Great work teams! You were able to teach us so much! Next week we will move on to Social Studies and take a look at our state government. Words: Words will continue as normal this week! Continue to practice at home. TEAM: Please ask your child what they are doing in TEAM this week. Students across 3-5 are working in small groups on reading, writing, and math related goals. This rotation will conclude before February vacation. Reading: Seeing the world from another person’s point of view is a topic of conversation that continues to come up as we read and discuss the story Wonder. The book is written in parts, and each part retells events in the story and carries the plot on into new events in order to share a different perspective from another character. It is important to consider what it is like to walk in someone else’s shoes and offer support instead of judgement. Great conversations are being had with these kind kids! Writing: Be on the lookout for opinion pieces being written up, distributed and further explored next week. Students will be collecting ideas for topics they wish to write about. Greetings!
Hello Families of 4W, A full week of school brought on hard work and a lot of in depth, learning. Your children are working harder than ever to come together as a community of learners and truly make an impact on each other. As the year continues, we are pushing each other harder to challenge themselves to “know thyself” and progress each day in some small way. This is a remarkable group of young people and there is no limit to what they are capable of. This week they worked together on new science projects. They were able to problem solve through social situations and academically challenging materials with confidence and success. I am looking forward to seeing where they can take us this year. We are preparing for Fraction February that will start next week! ScienceThis week we started group projects on specific topics in order to explore the different theories for how landforms are created and changed. Students across 3-5 are working in small groups on reading, writing, and math related goals. ReadingThis week we initiated a new reading fluency project to help encourage each reader to achieve either 30 words per minute of growth this year, or reach toward reading 180 wpm by the end of fourth grade. EVERYONE has already made progress, with some already beating their goal or even surpassing the 180 WPM. Well done! WritingIn writing we are wrapping up non-fiction and will be moving on to opinion and persuasive writing. If you notice your child is becoming opinionated and is also supporting it with reasonable evidence, they did not learn it from me!!! Ward Weekly
Jan. 29- Feb. 2, 2018 Greetings!Hello Families of 4W, What a great week at EKES! The only disruption was a 2 hour delay on Tuesday and the rest of the week we got right to work. This allowed us to get into a rhythm and really get a lot of learning accomplished. This class worked VERY HARD this week to limit distractions and off-task behavior. They were, in fact, focused, learning machines! I have no doubts that they will continue to work hard to stay on task and value their learning process! Today progress reports come home. I sat down with each child today and talked through their report. If you or your child has questions, please contact me and I’d be happy to help! They will continue to practice multiplication as they check their work. We are preparing for Fraction February that will start next week! ScienceThe Mystery Island projects turned out great and you can take a look for yourself on our class website for a sampling of what they did. This week we will work on a group project exploring landform theories and facts. WordsWords will continue as normal this week! TEAMPlease ask your child what they are doing in TEAM this week. ReadingDuring each reader’s workshop, your budding readers and fiding cozy places to read and escape into the world of a book. At the end of each block, they log their progress and write a short response about what they are reading. They are beginning to think very critically about what they are reading. WritingThe last part of Writer’s workshop is a time called “Greenbelt” writing. During this time, writers are free to do their own inspired writing in any genre that they choose. Some children are chapters into their own novels, creating numerous poems, or producing e-books on topics that they are experts in. A lot of joy goes into their writing! Ward Weekly
January 22-26, 2018 Greetings!Hello Families of 4W, We have been talking a lot about great habits and our goals since the start of this new year. Students have been working hard to get back into good routines and habits that help with their learning here at EKES. Please feel free to talk to your child about some of the habits, routines, or goals that they have been working on. WordsWith the snow day last week, we skipped a list and new lists will be given on Monday 1/22 and tested on 1/26. TEAMPlease ask your child what they are doing in TEAM this week. Students across 3-5 are working in small groups on reading, writing, and math related goals. ReadingAs we take that deep dive into the life of Auggie Pullman, this class continues to impress with their understanding of the world, their tolerance for the differences of others, and the celebration of the uniqueness of each individual. Well done parents! These are some truly inspiring children and I am pleased to learn among them. WritingNon-fiction pieces of all sorts are taking shape in our class. We have aspiring chefs, athletes, scientists, musicians, world travelers, and historians. Most importantly, these kids are learners! |
